OK So I just got back from being away with the miltary on training for a month. I had some one watching my corn snake for me adn feeding but she was a chicken and never took the snake out of her tank for feeding. I was told by feeding snakes in there tank it makes them think everytime a hand goes in its somthing to eat and they try to bite you. My corn snake is now coiling himself ready to strike and I dont know what to do it takes about 10 mins to wiggle my hand around so I can grab her body before she can turn her head. she has done a full strike once so far but thats it. Oh ya and once I get him out he is fine and cheerful and hangs about my hand and neck. Please I miss taking my snake out offten does anyone have any advice.

I'm not really a colubrid guy, can you hook train a corn snake? lol. The old feed outside the cage idea was a good train of thought, but it's also a very old train of thought. Yes, snakes are creatures of habit, but it's not good for them to be moved after eating. Also, they're learning that they come OUT of the cage to get food. Not to mention with something larger like a burm or a retic can be very dangerous to move after feeding as some of them stay in "feed mode" for days. What we do with our larger ones is condition them to only being fed on days they don't see the hook. If they see the hook, they know no food is coming in today.

What else has changed? maybe a slight RI or something that could be stressing her out? been in open view for awhile?

When I had my corn snake I never once took him out to feed.   Maybe getting used to seeing you more often will just calm him down?  It seems that now he ONLY associates people with food.   I had a boa like this and she calmed down quickly.

Yea not going to be hook training a corn, they aredumb.  I know had lots of them for a long time.  But Keith is pretty much right.  The more corns come out the better.  And like donnie said removing them for feeding just makes them think everytime they get out its feeding time, so you end up with the same problem.  Of course I did have one corn named Mean Ass he was never particularly nice.

Before I left I took him out as much as I could the only times I didnt was 48 hours after he ate. its just I went away she was susposed to take care bring him out play with him and then he gets fed out side the tank as well I checked the temps there fine he seems happy and once contact is made hes fine. It is the inital moving your hand in to his tank that he gets snappy.

Rats there close cousins are crafty and thats fun,  but yea corns not so bright..  Another reason I switched to boas.
