Question about Feeding Frequency
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:53:38 AM »
I wanted to get some input on my feeding schedule for my new male retic.

He is ~ 6 months old and about 3 and a half feed long (maybe as much as 4 feet).  He was listed as a 50 % dwarf Sunfire.  The breeder said he was eating small rats, but since my small rats seem to be a little too big, I'm feeding him rat weanlings.  The first feeding was one weanling, and then the second was 2 weanlings.  (One didn't seem to make the proper sized lump).  So I figure I'll feed 2 weanlings every 4 days until he's ready for the small rats.

Does this sound about right, or should I change something?

if he's 3 foot small rats might not even be big enough. The food item should be just a little bigger around than the widest part of the snake, but no more than one and a half times the girth of the snake. As babies fresh out of the egg I feed them weaned rats once every 3-5 days... a 6 month old 3 foot retic I'd do every 5-7 days. Not that 4 is going to hurt it, just watch and make sure he doesn't end up a little obese.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm guessing he's a little on the small side for his age.  My small rats are about twice his width right now.  So I figured a little smaller meal, more frequently, might be a good idea at first.  Then I'll extend the time between meals.  I don't want to power feed him, but also don't want to stunt his normal growth, either.
