3 year old Amel stripe growth problems
« on: December 07, 2010, 09:21:16 AM »
:newhere:
I got my first snake from a friend back in June, she is 3 years old and is an Amel stripe. My friend admitted to not feeding her very often (if at all!) She is around 20 inches long but is very thin, has a very small head and boggley eyes-like so :confused68: lol (I tried weighing her but my scales are just kitchen scales so do not show weigh that small)

Since I got her she has filled out a little, and is finally eating small fluffs. She has never refused food and always wolfs it down, she is my best eater! I was wondering if anyone knows of any potential health problems I may have with her due to her not being f ed/non growing, and if she will ever grow to full size?

I recently moved her in with 2 other corns, and she is happy enough in with them but I am worried she will not grow quickly enough and I will have to move her out on her own again.

If anyone has had a similar experience I would like to know so I can be a bit more clued up on it. I would post a picture of her but I haven't worked out how to do that yet so if anyone can explain how to do it I would be very gratefull  :thankyou:

Much love
Emi

I imagine we're talking about a Corn Snake here? As long as you take it slow with increasing the size of the food items she should be fine. Just watch for any deformation in the way her bones grow, such as kinks in the back or calcium deposits.

Yes she is a corn snake. She was on pinkies when I got her and I have increased her to small fluffs.
She doesn't have any deformaties and she is strong and very fast! I dont plan on breeding her as I do not want to run into problems.
My worry is if there are any future health problems she may have due to how poor her first 3 years of life were.
How would I recognise calcium deposits?
Im quite clued up on corn snakes and go to an excellent reptile shop, the owners are very knowledgeable on all reptiles and other exotic pets. I've just never encountered a snake this small in relation to age!

calcium deposits generally show up as bony lumps.

Ah I see, she definately doesn't have any lumps. From what I have learned, from talking to people, she hasn't got any health problems, she is just small. Im just hoping she doesnt develop any health problems in future! I do love her to pieces :)

Upload them to photobucket, then copy and paste the IMG link into your thread here.
