Half done with two new boa houses
« on: November 29, 2010, 12:53:22 AM »
So over the last couple of days Ive been gathering supplies, to make my boas some new homes.  Ive ran into a few snags, but with lots of messages back and forth between myself and Donnie I'm finally almost half done :)...  In case anyone wonders I'm basing mine completely off of Donnie's.  In this thread http://www.darksidereptiles.com/forum/index.php/topic,103.0.html,  So all Thnx to him.  Some minor changes will be a different style of trim,  also probably one more 1 1/2" vent making 5.  Oh and unless I can find some of that nifty sliding glass railing Ill have to come up with something different.

Some slight details in case anyone else gives it a try.  I went to Home Depot figuring to buy 4'x8' sheets and having them ripped to whatever sizes I needed.  I ended up buying one 49"x 97" sheet and 2   8' x 15" sheets.  Everything cut perfect with no spare wood except for 4 1/2" pieces.  The boxes inside measurements are W47" x D23 1/4" x H15" ( side note if you get it ripped at the store or lumber yard you will have to trim things when you get it home).  I used 2 1/2" drywall screws and predrilled every hole.  Don't use 2" construction screws I nearly ruined a side piece that way by splitting it.  Anyway I'm sure my next post will have lots o ideas on how not to screw up Like I have :)

I still have to.  Drill vents, add trim, add heating and tile.  And add front doors of course.

Sorry for the shotty pics snapped them with my phone.

check out lowes for glass tracks, home depot or make one out of wood =P but making it out of wood will equal a bit of swelling as what happened to mine and it can be a pain.

Yea oddly enough neither Home Depot or Lowes sales the glass track.  Both places told me Id have to buy the entire kit to do it.  But then it wouldnt be the right size.  Here in just a but Ill be going to a local glass store that are said to maybe have it.

Looking awesome, Steve! I stole Donnie's ideas too for Ivy's cage, all the way down to the heat tape under the linoleum, and it's worked out well for me so far!

However, I don't like sliding doors, I prefer swing out doors - either swing out to the side or swing down. So I did that to make up for no tracks! I have two acylic doors that swing outwards, with swivel hinges on each side (top, bottom, side) as locks. The only downside to this is you have to take the extra effort to make a frame, or a few inch lip all around the front for it.

Just an idea to get the gears moving! Good job so far! Can't wait to see the finished product!
Cheers!

Glad you actually used melamine... Too many people seem to think melamine is just white painted wood.... If that were the case? why would we be using it? lol. Stuff works awesome for humidity as long as you get all those seams sealed right.

I don't mind the weight really and I like the look.   My whole snake room is pretty much melamine cabinets now so why not more,  white?  A glass store came through for me on the rails there not exactly the same but close there for glass show cases.  So probably my next weekend off Ill finish these puppies up and post more pics of them.

A quick update.  I get to work on these between my real job and my children so its going a bit slowly.  Ive managed to all but finish them at this point.  I'm still waiting for the flexwatt and cords to come in then I can put that and the tiles down and move a snake into it.  I still need to put the trim on the front as well but its all cut and painted and ready to go. Heres some pictures.

that first picture is a shot of the sliding rack I had to use.  Its not so nice as what Donnie had but i cant find that anywhere, the company he bought it from replied to my email that they no longer make it.  I also ended up going with just the 4 vents but had to hand cut the plexiglass on them.   But anyway ill shoot some more pictures when there finished and I have some snakes in them.
