  • Rat snakes are good. Love them.
I have no pictures as of yet but my blue beauty is missing an eye cap.
I came home from a nine day trip to north and south dakota and guess what I found. My snake was curled up with only its head shed and a brownish bluish eye and a somewhat crooked jaw. Apparantly he was attemping to shed and somehow took off the living eye cap.
There is now a brown scab growing over his eye. I am going to try to get him to the vet today or tomorrow ASAP.
I predict he will lose the eye or eyesight in the eye and hopefully survive.
I really need help and I'm stressing like crazy. I can barely sleep.
This could have started anywhere from 2-10 days ago and I dont know what to do. Nothing on the internet about it at all.
The humidity is right as is the temperature.
I've replaced the bedding with paper towel and he is getting more and more scabby.
I think this was a freak accident or it could be my error somehow.
HELP!!!!!!
I may be crazy. But I'm loadz o' fun! ;P

if the eye is milky blue it is more likely a retained eye cap than a missing one... really gonna have to get us some pics. When you say humidity and temps are right... we need more detail, like the actual numbers. And if the eye is in fact injured, we need to figure out how it happened to prevent it from happening again, both for you and for other people that read this thread in the future.

The temp is room temperature or 75 on the cool side and the the warm side is about 80.
The humidity is at a constant 50-53% at all times and he has a large water bowl to soak in which is cleaned daily.
I'll get some pcitures in maybe an hour or around that. Maybe sooner.
What I think happened was my error for the most part.
His hide has one very rough edge that i never noticed before that about 10 inches of his shed from head to the beginning of his pattern (hes my profile picture and is about 4 ft to give you an idea) was connected to it and two eye caps where on the shed.
One was dry like a dead one and the other was soft and moist. He did not miss any sheds prior to this and I am sure that he has no eye cap anymore. It is scabbed over now but was just a bare eye yesterday and was starting to scab.
He is definately missing the cap and is scabbing over so his eye is covered now.
But it is shriveled and the pupil is cloudy as if cataracts were present.
I predict the eye will rot and need to be removed.
Ill get pics ASAP.
I may be crazy. But I'm loadz o' fun! ;P

Pictures aren't possible right now. My camera is not focusing well and they are all too blurry and the snake wont stay still. I'll try later.
I looked at it again and its definately not retained.
It's missing.
The eye looks horrible. If the eye was a grape before, its now a deflated raisin with a brown scab over it.
The eye is flat to the head and has zero vision so I think the eye is dead  :vomit:
the head of the snake seems fine. It seems like a freak accident and the hide is removed. The snake acts like its in no pain at all and is acting normally though a little more defensive.
This is all so stressfull..... :TEAR:

This is sad to hear about and I sympathize with you as we all are technically responsible for the care and safety of our reptiles.
My number one rule is leave nothing to risk in any of my snake enclosures. No sharp or rough edges on anything. Also, a good suggestion!!! I've used pieces of tight woven carpet wrapped around a thin board and secured to the board and place a couple in each enclosure and the snakes have great results with removing a shed with using the tight woven carpet to roll back a shed.
WE SEE NEWS STORIES ENTITLED “WHEN PETS GO BAD,” BUT OFTEN A MORE APPROPRIATE TITLE IS “WHEN PET OWNERS TURN STUPID!!!”

This happened to a friend's Burmese python, and it's eye eventually healed, so your snake's eye  might also...I've left him a message asking if he did anything to help it heal, and will report back immediately upon hearing from him.

Just heard back from him...he carefully wiped Neosporin on the eye, a few times a day, for about a week, starting the day it occurred.
