A message for kids wanting to keep hot snakes.
« on: June 12, 2010, 11:21:37 PM »
Inexperienced hot keepers and kids are getting on my nerves. I keep hearing about how they know everything and that they wont ever get bit. They know to much to get bit they claim. They say they know everything about the snakes and the venom itself. Ive been told by a teenager that hes not allergic to the venom (allthough hes never been envenomated to know if hes allergic).
They dont know if they are allergic to the venom UNTIL THEY GET BIT!!!! Then they can go into anaphylactic shock and die. Or die from the anti-venom administered to you to save your life. Either way these snakes have a protien to defend themselves and kill what they bite. Get what I said? Defend themselves and kill what they bite. Which means its no joke. Therefore use your head!! If your not 1000000000000% sure that you will be responsible and mature enough to be able to not get yourself killed then dont be anywhere near these snakes. Even the VERY BEST most experienced snake keepers get bit. You could keep snakes for 60 yrs and not get bit. But slip up one time and see if those snakes dont bury you. If you want a long dirt nap then do something stupid.

Theres an old saying im sure you all have heard before, and I will quote it now.

because a numer makes all the difference... i'd rather see a 16/17 yo whos had reptiles since they were about 7 decide to buy a hot rather then a 27yo who wants one after a year or 2 of keeping.

On a long enough time line, your bound to get bit by one eventually as a noob or an experienced keeper.  I never found the risk of getting killed worth having a cool pet.  I just enjoy other peoples hots  :music3:

AMEN To That Donnie!!!! Once bit by a "hot' there's no way of getting out of it.!!! Don't get me wrong i love them and my first pet snake was a water moccasin but i consider myself as having been real lucky back then.

well that's the opposite of what I was saying... lol. If you get bit by a hot, there's antivenoms and treatments if you make it to the ER in time. If you get wrapped by an 18 foot retic, you're not going anywhere without help, and in a few seconds if you don't get that snake off you... you're done. I know this section isn't for constrictors but it just crossed my mind that these same kids need not believe that retics, burms and condas are any safer than hots.

NO Big Snake should EVER be handled alone or trusted with anyone's safety. Regardless of a persons size or strength. I meant you can try to get away from a bad situation with a big snake but once venomated you've no other choices except to seek medical attention asap.
