Great Topic And Good Reading Material
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:52:54 AM »
This is why all my snakes enclosures are close to windows and why mine never have artificial lighting. I've always kept them this way.

(QUOTE)    No artificial lighting system in the world can provide the full spectrum and intensity of natural sunlight, its subtle changes in color as a day progresses, or the sun’s movement across the sky. For these reasons alone, the more natural daylight a reptile experiences, the better. “Natural daylight” may not always mean full sunlight; a herpkeeper must aim to provide species-appropriate lighting.

sounds reasonable, but i always heard their terrarium shoulldnt be in the full sunlight?
my new terrarium will come next to a window, but there wont be much sunlight falling on. i think it will become way too warm then. (i guess)
but i guess taking them outside frequently works to?

It's not the sun light itself that is essential as much as it is the day light itself. :O)

Nocturnal animals like boas and pythons prefer to hide from the sun, and come out at night. The sun is nothing more than a source of heat and a pain to their eyes. HOWEVER, when it comes to diurnal animals like iguanas for example, then I can see sunlight being a benefit. But watch out for the greenhouse effect.

My snakes must be unique then because the Boas and Ball Pythons are active all day when the light and especially the sun hits one end of their enclosure. They are never up moving at night.

My ball pythons hate the sunlight. I give them daylight(indirect sun) from one window across the room but they never cared for it. They are just too lazy to come out :)

You have to also take into consideration what your snakes are used to as for their physical activities. Mine spend most of the summer outdoors and know when the sun hits their enclosure it's time to go out and have some freedom. They adapt to their environment as well as the habits and lifestyle they each have with us all as individuals. A snake that has never been outdoors is usually very stressed out when they are out in a big open space. Just like a snake that never is exposed to sunlight nor is used to it finds it offensive.

Sorry Carla... Not trying to be an asshole. But that's exactly what nocturnal means. And thes species you and I keep are known as a nocturnal species. You shine light into any of my snake cages those snakes will push til they no longer have a face to push with.

I know your not trying to be an asshole LOL We've had these type of discussions many times before and like I told Peter in the post it has a lot to do with the way they are raised because my snakes all love the light and have a choice in each enclosure to be in it or not and they will sit in it rather than hide from it. I've never had any pushing issues with any of my snakes and even outdoors they have a choice to be in the sun and light or to go to a dark shaded cool sheltered area and you place one in the dark shaded spot and they will go right back out into the sun.

I know what nocturnal means I'm 62 not ten LOL Give me some credit here Donnie :O)

Seriously, my snakes seldom move at night and are on the go all day long.

I think you might have hit the nail on the head there. They want the warmth over the cool.
