New Cage I Just Finished
« on: April 26, 2010, 11:05:48 PM »
Just got one together for a friend who is getting his first snake ever at age 40...ish?   :lolsign:  Any way he liked the ones I built for my Boas so I built him one on a slightly smaller scale than mine because I'm setting him up with a Ball for now, so he can get comfortable with the basics. It's getting a fluorescent strip light and radiant heat panel that just came in today from Reptile Basics tomorrow, once my eyes quit burning from being up all day.We still haven't decided what we're going to do for air flow, I'm thinking cupboard vents if I can find some locally, if not we may go another route. He wanted one a bit smaller to be able to keep it in the house, so I made it 4x2x1,figuring that would be enough floorspace for a Ball. He's still deciding on a molding to use, then we'll trim out the face of it, but as it sits it's 95% finished. The only other thing I tried new with this one is that I discovered that Home Depot carries Lexan brand plexiglass. This stuff is much better than the the Optix brand I was getting at Lowes, and seem much stronger even for the same thickness. In this case 1/8", it's advertised as 250 times stronger than glass and I believe it.

I just used regular 5/8" plywood. Sometimes I get the kind that's sanded on one side, but we were working with a budget and this stuff isn't bad after 2 coats of poly.I was just checking yours out JT I would like to try my hand at one with some real wood like yours, but so far all of mine are plywood as well. Yours looks real nice.

Great looking homemade enclosures. I made all of my own also and prefer them over prefabs. Love the staining and coloring you used for the plywood.

Beautiful cage! I am considering building one and this fits the image I have in my head. Going. 5'x2'x18"

Any tips on measuring/ installing/finding the sliding glass doors? Seems like the hardest part. Do they make guides you just install in pre measured fronts?
