Alien Invaders On Animal Planet In Florida
« on: March 17, 2010, 02:34:48 PM »
So I recorded this show on Animal Planet Tuesday night called Alien Invaders in Florida. Besides the problems with Burmese Pythons learned a few things about other invaders I had know idea about. Monitor lizzards, sack pouch rats, and some type of pigs with tusks. Was a interesting two hour show on the problem in Florida. Never knew they had a problem with these rat's and pigs. They said if the rat's reached the city parts of FLorida there was going to be real problems. It's ashamed that some ignorant irresponisble people have to ruin the whole exotic pet trade for everyone else being responsible. Just plain makes me sick to my stomach.

I haven't watched this show yet. Have seen some people ranting about it though. Maybe some of those guys will chime in.

I saw that show.  Besides the obvious with the snakes; the pigs are some type of warthog, and the rats are freakin' the size of cats (10 lbs!)...come to think of it having burms around wouldn't be such a bad idea then...ANYWAYS, back to the topic.  We have some feral warthogs here in Charleston, SC.  They mainly live on the islands along the coast.  As for the rats, they had another show on Animal Planet about how these particular rats are trained to sniff out Tuberculosis and Land Mines.  There's good and bad in everything I suppose, it's all in how it's put into context.

Oh, we also have armadillos running around in SC too... redneck road lobster

I have video of me following a couple of armadillos around for like 10 min lol. I was so close to these things I could have picked them up but i let them just keep on looking for food. Anyways I know some people out here that they will honestly pick up fresh roadkill deer and armadillo and eat them if it is only a few hours old.

Yeah the pigs are everywhere, and they're not afraid of much. They even come into the city and and tear up people's yards bad, which is a big deal around here because almost now one has naturally grown grass it's all sod. ($$$$) I trapped a couple of small ones(25-30lbs) for a guy that were tearing up his flower beds,DAMN that was one pissed off old man  :HAHA: I haven't come across any of the " 3 ft long 10lb" African pouch rats yet, but if they really are that size, I sure would like to get my hands on a breeding pair, although I think he said they are banned in the US all together. The part they showed about the Nile monitors was pretty accurate, they were finding them here just about every every day for a while. The lady's house they showed that had the monitor on the pool deck was only a mile or two from me. The rest of the show, as was expected, was to be taken with a grain of salt, IMHO.
