Provent-A-Mite
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:42:53 PM »
I just about had a breakdown when I realized that my short tail had mites. I immediately stuck him in QT and began treating him with Reptile Relief every 3 days + baths every other day + treating the enclosure with Reptile Relief a few times a week. That was six months ago. For long periods of time, the mites would disappear, but would come back.

When I ran out of Reptile Relief, I decided not to order more. I bough PAM from Pro-Products. I followed the instructions, treated all of the snake enclosures (even though only two of the snakes had mites), and within the week, there are no mites. It's been about three weeks since I sprayed the enclosure, and PAM is beating Reptile Relief by a long shot! At one point I emailed Pro-Products with a few questions, and I received a prompt reply that answered all of my questions and helped me to understand why the mites had kept coming back when I used Reptile Relief.

Now I'm just angry that I didn't use PAM from the start. I would have saved myself a lot of trouble...

All in all, PAM is a great product that is working VERY well for me, and comes with wonderful customer service. :)

I've used PAM a few times and never had a problem with it.  When I first started switching to paper towels for my enclosures I was sure I wouldn't have been able to use it any longer, but wrong-o!   I bought my last spray can over a year ago, and am hoping that this will be my last purchase of pam  (wishful thinking!)

Yep, stuff definately has reptile relief beat hands down. Generally don't trust anything you can buy at petco.

I know this is a really old topic, but I would have to disagree on the general dislike for Reptile Releif by Nature's Chemistry. The stuff isn't meant for treating enclosures, but the snakes themselves. And I like it! POM is not safe to use on snakes, and is only meant to be used on enclosures. I keep Reptile Relief on me at all times, and any new snake entering my home gets soaked and wiped down with it. If you spray a mite-ridden snake thoroughly and run it through a white paper towel, you will see the dead mites afterwards just rubbing off. It's easy to treat a snake that comes into the hospital with Reptile Releif, because it is not in a mite-ridden environment. I've killed mite infestations that had them crawling over my and my doctors hands and white-coats. Of course, it's up to the owner to treat the enclosure at home with POM, otherwise, the "flea-free" animal we are sending home will just get re-infested again.

Again, POM is fantastic, but I wouldn't knock Reptile Relief - it has a whole different purposes. Apples and Oranges, I say, LoL.

Either way, I don't use POM anymore. Don't get me wrong, I love POM - I just use Rid Home Spray. Not because I don't like POM, mind you. Rid has the SAME active ingredient as POM. However, instead of spending $13.00-$19.00 at a show, I pay less than $5.00 at Wal-Mart. More convenient and cheaper.

I treat all of my bedding with Rid (or POM, if I had that).

Cheers!

i have to agree, i have used rid also, and when i could get it i used equate brand which is rid with a walmart label, but also if you mix 1cc of pig ivermectin with a standard 24 oz spray bottle full of water, shake it, you can use it on enclosure and snake, with water bowl present, but anyways, old post just wanted to comment on the previous one
when u mess with the snake, eventually you're going to get bit! jake "the snake" roberts

I'd never say to use POM or rid on the snake itself... ever... use it on the enclosure. for spraying the snake I use the ivermectin method our resident sasquach here just mentioned. Much prefer it over reptile relief, just haven't had success myself with reptile relief. With the ivermectin, keep in mind that solution is stable for about 7-10 days, provided it is kept out of direct light.
