Question!
« on: February 18, 2010, 06:01:07 PM »
Hey guys so some of you know I have an 08 Jungle Carpet Python. I got about a month ago and well she is not bitting anymore. But when I hold her she gets so tight around my arms and hands. Its like she wants to kill my arms. And I cant get her off. So I was wondering is this what most pythons do. Or is this something else. If anyone can help me that would be great thanks!!

I'm not sure what that is.I do know that a couple of my arboreals (like my scrub, and my ETB, and a couple GTPs I used to have - a category your JCP would fall into) used to do that quite often: just squeeze on really tight. However, when they did that, it was their signal that they where going to bite me. Without fail, if their grip got tighter, I knew it was because they wanted to bite me.

Maybe its a defense mechanism the way it is in some of my snakes?? Maybe she's just uncomfortable and afraid of falling and hanging on tighter for security??

Hell, maybe it's a sign of her taming down. If she used to bite often, maybe this her new alternative??

Maybe someone else has some experience with this. I wouldn't worry though!!

My JCP Ozzy will do this occasionally, but normally under the following circumstances:

1) He needs a good grasping point to explore/try to escape
2) He smells a potential food source/dangerous creature (i.e. one of our cats)
3) He is irked at me/at the house/at life in general

Granted, he is a somewhat cranky guy to begin with, but he has only bitten me once outside of his cage in the year since I've had him, and that was completely 100% my fault.  (Here's a tip: When demonstrating what kind of movements would aggravate a snake to get it to strike, the snake will probably strike.)

Admittedly, I tell everyone that he is bitey, but he hasn't tagged me in several months.  The more you work with them, the more comfortable they feel as living bracelets/necklaces, and the less likely they are to get nervous and hurt you.

Best of luck!

Thanks guys. I talked to some people and they told me to let her be for awhile. They also said it might be because she is pretty new to me and still unsure of me and everything around her. I will keep you guys posted on how she is doing thanks!!

VERY TYPICAL !!!!

Chewy often turns my fingers blue and sometimes my entire hand. They are just so active and they really depend on security when they are on the move and let me tell you they can lock onto something with a death grip with that little Prehensile tail they have.

Also forgot to add it's not an aggressive action. Semi-Aboreals and Aboreals depend on their grasp for security. Chewy is the most passive snake anyone could ever own and he does it every time he's out.

It's a security ( I don't want to fall issue) Which in itself indicates the snake trust you handling it for it's secure points.

Chewy will wrap my wrist and entire hand with his back end and will extend straight up in the air til he touches my ceiling just to check things out.

Well i dont know if this applies but my solomon island ground boa would do the same thing. He had a prehensile tail as well despite there name and he would just hang on for dear life and explore and hang down. I think it is just how he hung on to anything but like i said it is a dif species so i dont know if it applies.

It's a fairly common reaction from Carpets especially young Jungles. They are semi arboreal and hold on to branches tightly. Your arm is a branch and a warm one at that. They'll get a little more used to being held and a little less "freaked out" as it gets bigger. remember a small snake is the bottom of the food chain and everything eats them. My Jungles are 2 years old and still wrap me up but not very tight. I hope this helps. If there is anything else I can help you with, feel free to contact me.
