over night feeders go bad?
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:39:32 PM »
ok heres the question... my snake who hasnt eaten all winter...shes a bp showed interest in eating last night so i thawed a adult mouse to start see if she would take it she wouldnt so i left it in her hide which is directly over her uth..well anyway my intentions were to leave over night and dispose in the morning to see if she eats but i was late for work and forgot....well...when i got home from work i checked and it was gone...so if she ate it last night shes is alright but what if she ate it sometime later today after sitting all night over the uth and thru the day today...would it make her sick? I feel like such a bad snake owner cuz i forgot ..i was in such a hurry i hate it that i dont know when she ate it.

The best response to this would be you have to consider that snakes in the wild eat dead and rotting carcasses not that I would encourage it but they have a very intense digestive system.
Your snake should be fine I've thawed rats before and if they weren't eaten I have put them back in the refrigerator overnight and tried again the next day but personally I wouldn't try to feed any feeder to a snake that's been thawed out for anymore than twenty four hours.
Many people have different opinions on all such topics but myself I won't feed anything over 24 hours old.
WE SEE NEWS STORIES ENTITLED “WHEN PETS GO BAD,” BUT OFTEN A MORE APPROPRIATE TITLE IS “WHEN PET OWNERS TURN STUPID!!!”

I personally don't think you should be concerned at all. There really isn't that much break down on flesh that fast, specially when it has been frozen and that kills a serious majority of bacteria and microbes. That mouse was euthanized then probably frozen imediently, so there wasn't much time for decomp and such to really take place. i truly wouldn't worry to much. How many times have you or someone you know ate leftover pizza with pepperoni or some meat the next day. It's still flesh and spoils, rots, decomps in time, but not that quick. probably dried out and your snake ate jerkyfiedmouse worst case scenario LOL. MMMMmmmm Jerky :) :drool6:
