Cage Questions
« on: January 13, 2010, 03:12:08 PM »
Just took in a RTB from a gentleman leaving the United States. I really lucked out becasue this male RTB was a family pet for 5 years and super docile and friendly. Want to make a homemade cage and was wanting input on it. Was going to make it 4x3x3. Is that ok for adult or should I go bigger? Only plan on making this once so input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Steve

Manufactured or custom built enclosures are by far the best way to go. If custom building an enclosure avoid unfinished wood and porous surfaces because these surfaces are difficult to clean and disinfect, and the humidity and water spills could damage it.  You will need an enclosure that is, at a minimum, 4' X 24" X 24" to accommodate the full grown adult. I can promise you this. Custom made manufactured plastic caging is my favorite. Extremely light, easy to clean and most offer built in heat sources. I prefer black, just my favorite color. These are also easily stackable and offer greater use of space.

Remember large or proper sized enclosures have ample space to install hideaways, shelves and things for the boas to use if they feel vulnerable.

This from a boa site since i am not too knowledgeable in RTB's. Since it is full grown already i would just follow the 4'2'2' cage as a minimum. Personally i would go an extra foot or so just to give it more room. Thats just me though.

Sorry forgot to add that 4'3'3' is above the min required size so that should be good. Can you post pics of how big the snake is? I am just curious to see it.

you typically want one square foot of floor space per foot of snake. Therefore a 4 x 2 is good for an 8 foot snake. You want to watch the height aspect, the taller it is, the harder it is to keep the temps and humidity up. When I bred boas we kept them in cages that were 4 foot long, 2 foot deep, 15 inches high. You also want to avoid any exposed wood as it kills humidity. Melamine is a good choice for a cage material, though it's heavy. You can look in the caging section at my thread for DIY cages I built for my retics to get some ides on ventilation and such. The more ventilation you have, the harder it is to keep the heat and humidity in as well. Also, belly heat is definately the way to go. no heat lights.
