Need some caging help
« on: November 18, 2009, 12:14:29 AM »
As some people know i have 2 tegus Akira and Sophi...well last week the cage i was suppose to be getting for them was sold to someone else after i had been waiting months for it...and now i am forced to build my own...at first i had a great idea all planned out but it fell through so now i'm looking for help...i talked with donnie a bit about it and i decided to use the type of wood he used for his cages but i'm still not quite sure on what to do...here are the specs for what i'm looking for:
7.5ft by 3ft by 3ft
has to hold are 70 humidity
made for 2 5ft animals
somewhat movable, yet secure

i've heard of other tegu owners using plywood and wood sealers..which would be fine but not something i'm really thrilled about using. So any help would be more than welcome. :sign9:

gotta warn ya man... that much melamine in one cage is gonna take about 3-4 people to move, this stuff is HEAVY. your best bet will be to take it apart to move it. What part are you lost at?

pretty much how to put it together...i get take 4 wood panel put em together somehow...then make sliding glass doors(somehow)  and somehow along the way give it the ability to be disassembled w/o to much hassle...but to be honest is there anything else i could use that would be a little lighter? i mean with the humidity is my main concern, and i would like to stay away from a totally glass cage...

Expanded PVC would be ideal, but I haven't been able to find an affordable place to buy it. After seeing you on that 65 though... I'm a little concerned about you handling a power tool...  :rolfsmiley: sorry, couldn't resist.

any exposed wood like that sucks the humidity out of the air... plus it swells and gets soft when it's wet. Honestly, at least for monitors, don't know about tegus... the best thing to use is the big galvanized water troughs like you see used for horses, and build a top for it. here's a pic of one of proexotics setups for an example...

see those would be good BUT you shouldnt come ata tegu from above...which is why i need sliding glass doors other wise this would be easy...to be honest something like what you have for the retics and little D with some minor tweeks would be great..but that shit would be heavy

1stly thank you donnie i'll be getting a  horse trough for my sav when i can find a place to put it =P 2ndly i've figured out how i'm gonna put the tank together and it still have the ability to be taken apart =D sliding panels...if the panels slide they will have a tiny gap but nothing that will make the humidity drop like crazy, i'm gonna use Melamine for the bottoms and either Medium Density Fiberboard or more melamine for the side panels(mostlikely melamine) but since the part will slide and will be screwed together the wait of melamine wont be a huge problem lol...now i just gotta pay for it its gonna cost me well over 200 bucks to make this damn thing but when its done i will be so much happier it'll be 7.5ft by 3ft by 3ft and sit 2ft off the ground...the top will have hinges so i can clean the tank easily and change mulch...i figure this'll be done around mid-december or early january and i will have pics up of the entire process...i'm excited yet tired and dont worry Donnie i'll have a safety body suit on lmao no flying into bricks for me

Looking nice!!  How are you going to heat it??  Did you use melamine?  I am not a handy person so I can't tell from the pictures.  I didn't know what colors that melamine came in as I've only seen it as the white lol
