Info post- snake misscarried ( gross pic warning)
« on: October 29, 2009, 07:59:43 PM »
what a freaking night!

Just got back from the vets- I saw something OI have never seen before in my one snakes cage.  Never read anything about it, couldnt tell what end it came from or anything! I couldnt even speculate what it was.

I saved the junk in a bag and ran it down to the vets.

Turns out it was, in simple terms, a 'snake misscarriage'.

The photo is gross, but I want to share it with anyone who is a snake owner so perhaps save yo some extreme worry if you see this in your cage. Even if you dont plan onbreeding or havent paired up snakes yet- its still good to know because Abbey was never paired up at all.

Its gross. and was extremely scarry to see in the cage.

Details on the snake- Abbey is 2 years old, weights aprox 1500 grams. Never paired up, not cooled or anything to prep her for breeding ( other than feeding her good).

Vet said this could have just been an oddity from  her maturing, stress related, poor nutrition. Neither of which I could pinpoint on could be causing it- no changes to her cage or temps, she eats great on f/t feeders I raise myself.

Now, the bad news is it could be a bad ovary, growth or something not going right with the snake.  I havent noticed any odd lumps in her or anything.  He says it could have just been a one time situation, bu if it happens again, there could be something wrong.

So, my poor girl! He said it wont hurt her ot breed her this season, but I am really leaning towards not even pairing her up. I am just going to monitor her condition and all for  awhile. And hope it doesnt happen again!

Bt i just wanted to pass this on as some info. I havent tried googling it yet- as soon as I saw it I was on the phone with the vet and on my way there, but I never heard of it before, and I just want to pass the info on.

If anyone knows any info on this, feel free to share it with me!

I am just glad she isnt sick! she is in the snake room, and i was litterally just about to pair her up.

I just hope she is ok, and even if she cannot be bred, I just want her ot have a happy and healthy life!

Ok, i got a littl emor einfo from another forum post to share.

Maturing snakes can lay infertile eggs- its either gonna be the classic slug egg that they protect like its the fertile eggs, or the , what I call, the jelly eggs.

How common is it? I dont think extremely common, but just one of those weird things that can happen.

Its like the corn snakes, how they can lay infertile eggs.  Its not so common in the boids as the corns, but it can still happen time to time.  Now, to give you an idea, I have about 35 snakes, most of them are female. I never seen anothe rone do this.  I have some girls that are the same age as Abbey, but weight a little less.  I don't anticipate any other one doing it, but I know if I see it, I at least know what it is.

Opening the tub a nd finding that was pretty scary. If I seen her wrapped around slug egs I would have at least known what it was and that initial fear of not knowing would not have ben there. So, at least I shared info with others so if it happens to them, you may not be so clueless and terrified like I was. And I have yet to find any info on google about this- all I come across is the slg egg stuff! I am still looking because I want to read more on it, but I think it may be one of those things where the info I will find is from other people who keep the snakes.... but i am still gonna look and ask around.

So far, I have not seen anything out of the ordinary with the snake Abbey. Once she sheds, I am going to feel for any lumps just in case. But Iwills till pdate yas and let yo know how she does.

Wow!  That had to be scary!  Good to know for the rest of us tho...that it can happen...I know I would have shit a brick if I saw that!  Here's hoping she won't do it again and you can breed her next year!  :goodluck:

As you said, its not uncommon for reps to produce bad eggs, regardless of being paired up or not. The condition of those eggs would alarm anyone though. Is it possible that her body knew they were bad and decided to just get rid of them right away instead of making them actual "eggs" with shells and all to save her a little bit of energy and health? Did the vet said they were premature or anything like that? Very interesting post. Thanks for sharing and good luck with her.

The vet didnt really go too in depth.

He said slugging out could be from:

Stress- tho I changed nothing with her cage- husbandry is good and everything. Altho she is deep in th eblue stage of shed...

Poor nutrition- this snake eats great on f/t soft furs that I raise myself.  Now, if f/t is for some reason not as good as live ( i do believe something is lost in the freezing process)- then I would think other female would be showign these signs- heck- my breeders last season were always offered f/t and they didnt slug out.

oddity- could have just been an oddity in her maturing state- just somethign that happened, since snakes can lay eggs that aren't fertilized.

Somethign wrong with her ovary/reproduction oragans- she could have something going on that caused it that only presented itself now because of her maturing- be is a lump/tumor or somethign wrong with her insides.  He didnt really stress this because it happened just once, but if it happens more, then there could definatly be something wrong.  But he said undeveloped eggs. I think if this does happen, its either gonna be the classic slug egg or jelly eggs. Jelly eggs are undeveloped, where as the classic slug eggs went full term... i guess the situation could very well go either way really, but I am not sure since cant find anythign about it.

But I am still searching. But yeah, I did want to let other people aware of it so its not such a huge shock if you see it.  If you do see it, make note of it and keep your eye for it happening again- you really cant miss it in the cage-LOL.

But next time I talk to my vet, I will ask a bit more about it. So if you have any questions about this situation- post them here and I will ask them.

So far, i am not disturbing her since she is in shed, but i am not seeing anything wrong with her. Will keep you updated tho, and will let yous know if i find anything once she sheds.

Wow, crazy story man. Thanks for sharing. That is way strange/weird. I'd have a heart attack if I saw something like that!! Never seen anything like it. Good thing she is okay though!! I don't know if I'd want to risk breeding her after that though, as unharmed as she seems.
Cheers!

Well, i am not breeding her this season for sure.  Next season I may give her a shot.  Still havent found much info on it, but what I did hear is it could just have been a freak occurance. If I dont see it from her again, i prolly will breed her next season. If i see it from her again, gonna think about getting her xrayed or soemthng- i will discuss it with my vet- he knows i planne don using her in breeding projects.  So i have a year to monitor her condition and then make the ultimate decision later on.

But for now, I will not pair her up! I feel it is what is best for her.

WOW Madame EDF, that was a pretty freaking one and I can figure you were a lil-bit worried.

BTW, you just done a super nice job on informing the Community about one of the oddity we can found inside our terrariums sometimes, thanx for sharing pic and story, and also thanx for your feelings about the whole talk with your vet you also did share with us.
Plus I totally agree with your choice on waiting and keeping Abbey under suvey and avoiding her breeding session this year (this makes you looking like a kickass breeder, who TAKES CARE about her creatures instead of turning onto the bad behavoir of onbreeding creatures witch could be endangered during the "gestation", you made the right choose, Madame, congrats again)
I'll keep an eye onto this super thread, of course.
