Charity auction!
« on: September 24, 2009, 10:40:14 PM »
So a close friend of mine just recently found out the dog she just got has heart worms and the treatment is going upwards of $1000
with a tight budget and a husband constantly in and out of the country (he;s in the marines) We, over at herpfamily, have decided to help her out by having a fund raiser to pay for her vet bills!
Obviously most of you are not regulars over there so I wouldn't expect you to just donate for no reason to someone you don't really know BUT we also have an auction running on a reverse okeetee corn snake produced by Ridgetop reptiles. All the money made on the corn will go towards her vet bills to save her dog!
I know a lot of you here are more into pythons or monitors or other things bigger and not so common as corns but if you are interested please feel free to place a bid and help this girl out!

and sorry Donnie, i'm not trying to advertise my home site or steal people from you, i'm just trying to help my friend out.

Hope it goes well for her and her dog gets the treatment that it needs.  It will not only need money though, it will require her to keep her dog confined and if the dog survives the treatment, then she needs to put it on heartworm prevention and most likely all year round since ya'll have mosquito's year round Florida ;)

yeah, it's a long hard road, and the worst part is that she didn't even bring it on herself, so it's not even like you can be mad at her for not giving the dog heart meds. She just got this dog a few weeks ago from a woman who didn't want it anymore....and in light of this new information she thinks this is why the woman gave her up.

Yeah I'm sure you wouldn't be the one to openly help any of the dumbarses that actually let it happen to their animals.  It's a sad story when people let this happen and then just decide to get rid of the dog because they either can't afford or accomodate the consequences of their actions!!

Like I said, good luck and hope he/she does good and gets through the treatment safely!!

That really sucks. My dog (who we had to put down late last year) had heartworm. We couldn't afford the BIG treatment but they gave us a medication that kills the larvae, just not the adult worms for a more affordable price. It keeps the dog from getting anymore adult worms. I'm sure it works for some dogs, but every time I gave her the meds and steroids she would throw up. I quit giving the steroids with the meds and the vomiting stopped, but without the steroids there is a risk of heart failure. She did fine though. I hope enough can be raised!

Unfortunately a lot of older dogs that get heartworms either will not be able to safely handle the full treatment or their life is more valued for the time that will be left so giving them the heartworm treatment will kill the larvae like you said but not the adults.  It's an easier treatment on the dogs, but still can make them sick to their tummies and cause damage just the same with the full treatment.
