What a beast!
« on: September 21, 2009, 04:49:23 PM »
Sup ladies and gents.

Now I know most of you know how infatuated with pyxies, and frogs in general I am. But, I just had to say for the umpteenth time, MALE PYXIES ARE INSANE!

If some of you guys remember, when I got my first female pyxie a while back. I started a thread in the growth progression section to show how insanely fast the males grow, even though she turned out to be a female.
But anyway, I didnt make another thread to track the males progression and I really should have. I got him August 21, thats exactly 1 month today, and this crazy freakin frog has grown 3'' in one month! He was barely 2 1/4'' when I got him and when I measured him today, he is just about 5''.  This frog is going to be a freakin beast!

Here are some pic of him, he got his first rat today, and enjoyed it immensely!

And here are some pics of my big female just for fun. The way she ate that thing, you would think I starve the old girl!

Lmfao, wow Chris, that's awesome!!!

Maybe a stupid question but it's only stupid if I don't ask it right?  Lol, anywho.. do you keep them together in the same enclosure?

What size rats do you feed them and how often??

Right on the money about that stupid question part.

They arent housed together. They can be if kept very well fed and in a large enough enclousure. But its never really recommended. These guys tend to eat anything that come near them when theyre hungry, and that includes any tank mates.

The female ate a really small, small rat. The male had a rat pup. They get rodents about once a month, but sometimes a bit longer in between. Theyre more of a treat. Its very unhealthy for the frog to feed anymore than that. That rodents have a lot of fat and hurt the frogs liver if fed too many too often.
But once a month is generally safe.

That's kind of what I was thinking, about the tank mate part and also have read about rodents only being treats for these guys also.  Thanks for clarifying though.  They are really neat little critters and I can't believe how fast they grow!!

Here's another stupid question, lol.
Do they have teeth? And have you ever been bitten by them?
I imagine it would just be funny if they are toothless, but I wouldn't want one of those vacuum cleaners chomping on me with a mouth full of teeth.
Lol, I know nothing about frogs obviously.

Hey everybody, thanks for the kind words!

Ivy, she is loving her new home! She has a nice big burrow all dug out under that plant you can see in the pic. She spends her day in her burrow, with just her face sticking out incase an easy meal happens to stroll on by. As soon as I turn the lights off, she comes out of her burrow and gets in the water, and stays there till morning. Though she does sometimes stay in the water for a couple days at a time.

Heart&Soul, they dont have teeth per se, but they do have 2 bones that are teeth like protrusions that stick out from their bottom jaw which helps to hold onto things. But they arent actually teeth, its just jaw bone. They also have very small kinda boney bumps on on their jaws, but again its bone on the jaw, not teeth. But you only can really see the 2 big protrusions in the middle of the jaw.

Im lucky enough to have not been bit by a pyxie (yet), but Ive been darn close. I have been bit by one of my large pacman frogs though and it wasnt fun. Clamped on and did NOT want to let go, kept biting over and over trying to get my finger further down its throat. They have extremely strong jaws, and can easily split a nail if they bit your finger in the right spot. Pyxie's, especially the males, are much much larger frogs than Pacs, so I imagine a bite from one of them would be pretty damn painful.

Just notices, it was actualluy the frog in my Avatar that bit me and tried to swallow my finger! lol

And heres a pic so you can kinda see what Im talking about with the 2 middle protrusions.
