Paint?!?
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:36:24 PM »
So we've all figured out what type of Silicone is safe for Reptiles (Silicone II), but what about PAINT?? Is there a certain paint out there that is guaranteed-safe for a snake enclosure, or are there specific ingredients out there to read for and avoid??

Experience and tips appreciated!! Thanks!!
Cheers!

personally I try to avoid any type of material that I would have to paint, as that's usually wood which sucks humidity out of the air. The melamine you see on my cages comes like that, laminated white on both sides, so there is no exposed wood aside from the oak trim I have on the front, and even that I sealed the hell out of.

Yesh, but I was thinking of the possibilities of changing the color of Melamine, LoL.

Though i did hit jackpot today on that area... I'll post later.
But for the future...

you can laminate it yourself just about any color you want... but I haven't found a cheap way to do that.

I got lucky and got ahold of SOME Black Formica (not really enough to do a whole sheet. Guy was practically giving it away for $10.00 a sheet. But on any other normal occurrence, that crap is ridiculously expensive. There is Melamine paint, but who the hell knows if that stuff is toxic? I don't. It's by the quart, a decent price, and you'll need alot. Plus apparently it's a real pain in the ass and there must be a real art to it. Not worth the risk, and too expensive. You can also buy the roll out sticky stuff you iron on, which is the cheapest way I've found, but again, is that glue toxic?? I don't know.
