At long last!!
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:52:18 PM »
Sup all! Well I have some awesome news, after trying for almost 2 years, I have finally gotten a male pyxie frog!!

I picked up 2 at the Daytona show and thought they were both females, but last night during a huge thunder storm I started hearing some weird ass sound. So after following me ear to my herp room, I open the door and see one of the new little guys swelled up in his water bowl just croaking away. Sounded like a retarded baby cow! I tried to get some audio of it, but he seemed to know as soon as I got the camera out and got stage fright.

I was just so stoked, and I had to tell someone, and none of my real life buddies would be too interested in hearing about how Im excited over the sex of a frog. LOL.

Ill throw some pics up soon so you guys can see the new little dude...though he's already 4'' so he isnt too small anymore!

That is great Chris.  :music3:

I don't know much about Pyxie frogs, do only the males make sounds?

Thank yas!

Yea Kricket only males call. Females will sometimes vocalize if in defensive mode, but its not really a call, more like a grunt. Only males will actually sit there croaking, and this was full on croaking, throat expansion and everything!! It was rad, and so cool to finally hear! Im so excited!! Can you tell?! LoL.

Hmm possibly. In theory Id love to do it, but its pretty tough to get these guys to breed naturally in captivity. Pretty much all the frog breeders use hormone injections to get the frogs to maturity quicker and sorta force them into breeding, and Ive heard its quite expensive to do. Also you have to build a big rain chamber, which is like a tub with about 4-5'' of water, with pipes overhead constantly "raining" down on the frogs to simulate the rainy season. Another thing is females lay like 3000 eggss, and thats a shit load of tad poles to take care of!! LOL.  A ton die though, pretty sure they have like a 10-20% survival rate. It would be really cool though to produce my own, Im not gunna lie. I might give it a whirl some time down the road, we'll see.
