General Information
Ball pythons are arguably the most popular python in captivity. With their small size and docile temperaments, they make the perfect pet snake. They are readily available in the pet trade and come in an array of different color morphs and mutations. Regular phase ball pythons are mostly brown and black with some white. They were given their name of Ball python because when they feel threatened they usually curl up in a tight ball with their head in the middle.

Habitat
Grasslands, savannas, sparsely wooded areas.
Size
Hatchlings are usually 9-11" in length. Males stay smaller than females, usually between 3-5 ft but sometimes bigger. Females are usually 4-5 ft. The biggest ball pythons can be up to 6 ft in length.

Temperament
Ball pythons are well known for their shy and peaceful demeanor. They rarely if ever bite and are a great beginner snake.
Captive Care
Diet
Ball Pythons should be started on appropriately sized rats as soon as possible. They are known to be picky feeders, so it is best to skip feeding them mice if possible. A switch from mice to rats later in life can be much harder than if they were started on rats in the first place. Ball pythons are also notorious for only taking live prey. However, it is possible to get them to switch to f/t. Feeding appropriately sized prey once a week is sufficient for the Ball Python.
Temperature
Ball Pythons need a basking spot of 88-92F with a background temperature of 78-80F. The ambient temperature should never fall below 75F.

Housing
Ball pythons can be housed in a variety of different enclosures, including plastic tubs, professional caging (Animal Plastics, etc), and even aquariums. Hatchlings can be housed in shoebox size Sterilite tubs and adults will be comfortable in cages approx. 36x18".
Breeding
Ball pythons are ready to breed between 18 months and 4 years of age. Males mature faster than females and can breed as small as 500grams of weight, while females need more time and should weigh 1500grams before breeding. Breeding season typically spans from November to March. Stop all feeding, and introduce the female into the male's cage. Misting and photoperiod can induce breeding behaviors. Make sure both animals are in top shape before breeding. Females shed 14-20+ days after ovulation. Eggs are usually laid 30 days after the post-ovulatory shed. Ball pythons usually lay between 4-12 eggs a clutch. You should incubate the eggs at 88-90F and expect them to hatch approximately 60 days later.

Ball pythons are great snakes for both the beginner and the seasoned veteran. They are docile and come in so many different colors there is one for everyone. They are low maintenance and personable pets, it is no wonder they are so popular.
