New Rescue Burmese
« on: August 04, 2009, 05:44:59 PM »
I used to Volunteer at the local Humane Association in Delaware. Since than, whenever they receive calls about any reptile at all, they just forward them to me. Last week, I received a call from a woman trying to rehome a Burmese Python. Her son had just graduated from EMT school and was moving into the apartment above their Firehouse to continue his career... a place where his pet snake could not go.

That female Burmese was at least 7 years old. Her son had bought her from a pet store that wasn't even open anymore. She admitted that she was terrified of the snake and did not think she was able to care for it and feed it after her son moved out. The way she described this Burm made her sound huge; not to mention she would come with a 12' cage.

Frank wanted to go get her, so I got the biggest Tupperware container we could find and headed over there last Thursday, expecting a snake the size a 7 year old Burmese Python should be.

This was the massive cage she came with:

Pretty Ridiculous, huh? Well, after loading up the pieces of cage, I was shocked when I was handed a pillow case, not even half full of snake.
My 7 year old Python is only 8 feet long. My 2 year old Green has nearly 3 feet on her. We did probe her when we got home, and she is indeed female. She has been fed large rats every 1-2 months for the entirety of her life. I can't wait to start feeding her weekly wabbits.

She had mites, which we eradicated. It wasn't a terrible infestation but they were there. She has some pretty major flaws in her scales. The original owners thought they were doing the snake a favor by building her this massive cage kingdom. But it is made out of plywood, (I'm sure she's never experienced real humidity in her life), and the gashy-like scratchs are probably just from her rubbing up against frank wood for so long. They are ugly, but superficial, and nothing that needs medical attention, and she should be able to shed it out.

She isn't to friendly though, LoL. She's already bit my wrist and tried to wrap my arm, haha.

But here she is, fitting in a 90 qt tub, for now.

Cheers!

Good save! Poor snake. The Prevoius owner were probably doing exactly what the pet store told them to do. A rat a month and such. What a shame.

Thanks Donnie!! And your Probably right. I think it should be illegal to sell Burmese Pythons (and Rocks and Retics) in Generic Pet Stores where any Joe Shmoe walking in to buy dog food can see. When I asked what she ate, I was shocked to find out she was fed a rat at an approximate every 6 weeks. There's a baby Retic and baby Burm at one of the local pet store in our area now...

Wonderful work there Chelsea, I'm glad she'll have the home she deserves and she really looks like she's a beauty as well.   Best of luck with her.

Wow that's a sad story and pretty typical of today's society of local pet stores.  Glad she's in great hands now and can get the best of care.  Can't wait to see how her life becomes now :)

Thanks for the kind words, guys. You know whats even funnier, I think they were more surprised to here my Burms get rabbits every seven days than I was to hear they give rats once ever 6 weeks!!
