Breeding Burm's
« on: June 08, 2009, 06:31:39 PM »
Okay, i'm doin' it yet, but i'd like to try my hand at it.  breeding is the only thing i haven't dabbled in over the years, but i want the general idea of what it would cost to start up.....just curious, i mean best way to incubate, best way to keep the hatchlings have the hatch ect. etc. i know i haven't even gotten the snakes yet, but i like plan to ahead, sometimes too far ahead. lol. :thankyou: in advance for passin' on your knowledge.

You're most welcome.  I'm somewhat of a grammar freak so don't mind me sometimes.  I don't usually say much, but that one caught me and I had to read it over cause I was like "something isn't right about this" lol!!

lol, well, are you going after a specific morph? generally you want 2 females for every male. What burms do you have in your collection already, and what are you planning on getting?

I want to work with greens, albinos, and granites.  Currently i have no burms in the collection, wife made me adopt out all the reptiles when our daughter was born premature.  one of those scared mother moves....but has come around on it.  I'm working on aquiring a few sub adult burms from high end herps, and hopefully a few hatchlings, i really don't want to get too many to start with, that way i can garuntee them the time and proper care they need.  but i was getting one male and two females.  no one had filled me in on the 2 males for every female.

ahhh hell, big typo! lmao, no, you want 2 females for every male. If you really plan on breeding man, you should make sure you get some good quality stock too, because the parents represent what you will be producing. You breed ugly, mean, or defected parents... you get ugly, mean, or defected babies. What kind of enclosures are you planning for them?

fixed the typo in the above post.

i have a guy who's built all my cages in the past, i was planning on working with him on 8x3x16inches.  the animals i'm looking at right now are beautiful, and according to the guy i'm talking to have a gentle demeanor.  obviously i'm also looking at very young animals too. now on the cages, should the be bigger for breeding?

most breeders use cages that are 6 ft x 3 ft and 18 inches tall. Unless you have a 20+ foot snake that's more then enough.  How are you heating the cages?

i was thinking of going with radiant heat panels this time around.  Usually in the past i've stuck with rigging up UTH's in the cages, but from what i read the radiant heat panels work great.  and 6 ft. is what i have used in the passed, i just assumed, that with putting 2 snakes together for breeding they would need extra room, and dropping back down to 6 would save me 50 bucks a cage.  but you know what you do when you assume.....make an ass out of uma thurman.
