field herping in ohio

what has been your experience, or should i say luck? it sounds like a fun time regardless of the success rate. i myself would be just happy just hiking around. I've never gone out for the soul purpose of it, but in my camping/fishing weekend trips it has always been a special thing to come across any reptile. i love animals and the outdoors,so searching for some coldblooded friends sounds interesting to me. i completely admit the reptile/especially snakes thing has stormed my life. Just curious what the Ohio ecosystem has to offer.

I was out in the woods the other day looking for critters, only found some crawdads though. We weren't out there very long though, and I wasn't expecting to see any reptiles in that location. We plan to do something like that every Saturday though, good exercise and it would be nice to find something. In the past I've found hundreds of various Garter snakes, Black rat snakes, Northern water snakes, Brown snakes, copperheads, Fox snakes, eastern milksnakes, ribbon snakes, box turtles, map turtles, painted turtles, red-eared sliders, soft shell turtles (never caught these, but see them all the time), snapping turtles, northern fence lizard, five lined skinks, and various toads and frogs. You can find salamanders but I've never found any, lol.

lol, it'll be worth it I think chelsea! yeah, we definately need to plan something guys, thinking maybe in may as that's when it's finally warm enough to start seeing alot of stuff up here. Not that ohio has much to offer compared to other states as far as reptiles go... but it will still be a fun time for dark side people to get to meet one another and hopefully learn a few things and have some fun with grass roots herping.l

Definately interested in going to a couple herping adventures and meet fellow herpers.  Interested in party nights also, just that it is a little difficult to pull that off with a 6 1/2 year old in tow.  lol  I don't know if a lot of reptiles live around the Lake Erie shores or not, but we are less than 1.4 miles from a park on the lake and then about 300 yards behind the house is a big pond that could potentially have a lot around it.  We really don't know what is around us as far as native reptiles considering we didn't move in until late August/early September.  Didn't get a lot of chances to do any significant amount of scouting while we were setting up the house.  By the time we had spare time the snow was falling.
