Petco....  URgh
Petsmart....  double Urgh
both make me ill serriusly.
about the only thing Either is good for MAYBE is finding supplies an thats ONLY if you don't have acess to the net to order stuff from beter places for beter prices. IF an thats a big IF you are lucky  @ either  someone might have an inkeling of knowledge.  1 outa of 10 MIGHT be able to tell you some basic care requirements an all use the "Well what i do for mine at home is" line. I would rather go to a small mom an pop store ans upport them then buy anything from petco or petsmart. Its been proven time an time again that the company employs people who know nothing,  most don't realy care, an that their so called "breeders/suppliers" often keep their animals in horrid conditions. So no Petsmart of Petco isn't the best bet an neither is Petland -__-.
My adviceis steering clear of them. If you have the net, an you wanna find agood quality cb animals all you gotta do is look, an there are plenty of breeders out there selling them for decent prices.

As for ball pythons as a starter... No... Balls are deffinately not good starters.  People tend to toatly underestmate their care requirements an then wonder why they wont eat, or why they get snappy an semi agressive. A good starter is frankly a Corn Snake, or even a Milk or King Snake.  But deffinately not a Ball.

I dig and totally respect your advice on the big box brands.  Maybe it's because the ones around me (KC) seem to be better than others in other areas on their standards of care?  I'm just saying that sometimes, for the first time snake buyer that doesn't even know the community is there, or that resources like this forum are available, it's not the worst choice.

I really think the local pet store is the way to go if you can find a good one, or a show if you already know what you are talking about, but finding a local store that really knows reptiles is a minefield for someone who knows absolutely nothing about reptiles.  Even stores that are really awesome for other pets, are no guarantee that they are really good for reptiles.  If they don't know how to decide if a local shop is good or not, how can you expect a newbie to choose wisely?  They don't even know what to look out for.  And, I have seen local shops that will tell me one thing (after they realize I know something about snakes) and tell a newbie something totally different.  There is no consistency for the local mom and pops.  Therefore you get extremes.  Really great ones, most that are honest and great people that are not reptile experts, and some real con artists.  My wife used to work for our local PetSmart and I have been standing nearby when their "reptile specialist" has been talking to newbies, and they are generally correct in their advice.  I wouldn't call them experts (or me either for that matter), but if the person followed their advice, they would get a nice animal at a ridiculously high price, and would have a generally good outcome.  I think that is fair for the first time.

Donnie, IBD from PetSmart?  Wow, sorry to hear that.  Did you call their hotline and report it?  They do take that kind of thing very seriously.  Once when my wife found out that her store's PetHotel was not walking the dogs properly at night, she call it in.  They did a full investigation and fired the GM of the store, the night manager of the hotel, and a couple of employees that were faking the care records.  That's a really bad thing to hear.  I know they are a big corporate environment, and the prices are outrageous, but I do believe they pay attention to the care of the animals in their stores.  I have seen some of their employee care standards training.  They get pretty ridiculous at times.  Now, whether you can count on a high school kid paid minimum wage to actually follow the standards correctly and consistently is another matter altogether LOL!

I definitely think they are both better options than the guy up the street with 10 gal tanks that Donnie mentioned or getting one from craigslist with no history from someone who doesn't want the animal because it isn't cool to clean cages.

I recently say a BP that a newbie got off of craigslist that was obviously malnourished and had scale rot from a nasty cage setup.  To the new owner's credit, he immediately took the ball to the vet, is cleaning the wound daily, has hooked up with our local snake shop guy to get the feeding back on track, and the ball is healing up nicely.  Good on him, and good news for the snake.  I just think we forget how alien and mysterious snake husbandry was for all of us at one time or another.  What is common sense for us is "OMG really?" material for the average noob.  Obviously, none of us would buy a BP from a big box.

I too would recommend a colubrid over any boid as a first snake, but if you aren't into colubrids and get a healthy CB ball, you will do just fine with a little research.

Report it? I threw a fit! had to take them the body and vet papers... they wouldn't reimburse me the vet bill though. To hell with pet stores man.... don't do it

he already has his first ball, he's talking about a second. Which would definately be some kind of morph, again, not pet store stuff. I don't condone breeding normals... there's too many homeless normals out there as it is. But we're talking about a second snake now... either some ball morphs are good, or like I said, a nice carpet would be awesome! maybe even a boa,  if that's your kind of thing... personally I'd try to go with something that not every other tom dick and harry already has.

Donnie,  sorry, just reread it and you said Petco not PetSmart, my bad.  I have absolutely no experience with them at all, and assume that they must have similar procedures and guidelines to PetSmart.

Yeah, agreed.  No big box second snake.  You are right.  I got off topic with the first time buyer riff as if doesn't pertain to the original question.

theres always an acception to everything i've been in stores an heard a rep etc. giving bad advice turned around an steped in when its obvious the rep doesn;t knw wht their talkin about an just tryin to make a sale to some poor newb who doesn't knwo anything. Its one of the reasons I made friends with the local pet store owner. he iwll tell you reptiles are not his thing, hes a dog an fish kinda guy. So when he met me I was an still am who he calls when he gets soemthinge ither in that he doesn;t knwo about or never heard of, or when a customer has a question. I;ve ben in the store just to get crickets an hear my name get called from the reptile section to help a customer or somethin lol
next week just for this reason i am picking up a cupple new herps :P its a surprise though so not tellin what they are yet lol.

a 2nd snake can be something tricky though it all depends on what the person wants to get into. Obviously you don't jump from a ball python to a retic, but if said person wants to get alil biger, peraps a RTB, or a Carpet would be nice ^^ or if they wanna go arboreal, Amazon tree boas ;) just all depends on the person's want.
