What do ya'll think?
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:19:27 PM »
We want to convert to a rack system but as finances dictate, we are unable to spend that much.  Here's what we are eye-balling to convert into a rack.  Just wanting opinions and maybe some ideas on the setup...

This is now my son's dresser...here is the front

the back...

the two bottom drawers are about 1 3/4 ft w 1 3/4 deep and foot or so high

the top drawers are same dimensions except height they are about 6-8"

The top drawers are perfect size for our ball pythons and the two bigger ones for the albino burm and the boa...we think...any opinions are appreciated :)

I've typed up a long ass thing on these before (I searched the Kingsnake Forums for my original post, but no dice). They look so perfect don't they?? Pre-built... cheap... I always catch myself at Wal-Mart or Target, re-checking them over. But quite frankly, I would never ever use them to house any of my snakes. I mean, if you can figure out a way to make them work, or your crafty and have the ingenuity to alter it, please share!!

Next time your staring at these drawers... pull out one of them half way, and reach your hands upwards towards what would be the "roof" of the drawer space, aka what your snake would stare at if it looked up. You'll notice that the plastic bases are really jagged and uneven. Where the top of the bin should meet the ceiling, there are gaps... two centimeters are more. To state the obvious, I have seen crafty ball pythons get through much smaller. They're not exactly that snake safe... try it, just feel around real good. Additionally, all those spaces really are going to be hard to keep humidity up... wayyy to much airflow, which will also make your thermostat run double time.

Lastly, they're not sturdy at all. If you put one of those on a level floor and gently push the top of it, it WILL lean. There are the stackable kind too, and if you get a stack high enough to your waist, you push on it, it WILL lean and it WILL give.

Bad idea in my opinion. I really wish I had the old post, I went into more detail... but for lack of time... I hope this helps.

P.S. The supportive structure is hollow. One of my snakes escaped one day and crawled up the tubing of one of these I had sitting next to the rack for storage. It took Frank using a saw and me FREAKING OUT to get him out.

Thank you.  We were just looking for a temporary solution to get our "kids" out of their cages.  These aquariums just suck.  That, and the burm is needing more room...guess we will just have to wait a little while longer for the funds to invest in a real rack system :(

I'd have to agree I wouldn't trust any of the store bought drawer storage systems.  It's really not that expensive to make a rack, though.  You don't even need to be that handy to build a functional rack, custom fitted for whatever tubs you want to use.  I've made a couple and it's not hard at all.  I don't have plans, but there are examples I've seen around the web, and I could get some pics of what I've done, if you wanted.

Well whether you know it or not, the drawers would be accessible to all snakes, which would definitely be a problem.

There are much easier, much more secure ways to go about housing your snakes ..in a makeshift rack type system ....with just a couple of boards (pieces of melamine), some heat tape, an adapter, a dimmer, and some aluminum tape ...oh.. and tubs!  :P

If you are just trying to move the Balls over to a different set up, until you can get a "real" rack system built or bought ...then materials for the makeshift should actually be less than $50, if you shop wisely ..and scavenger around your house a bit   ;)

Other than that.. I have to agree on those plastic shelve/storage thingies... I can't even use them for my "good" art supplies   :-\

We were trying to scavenge around the house lol...that's what we had...unfortunately, we will need to buy EVERYTHING for a rack...but we have been talked out of it...no worries, no snakes mingling or running (pun intended) loose :D

Funny you posted this...

Last year, I saw these and some other styles at Wal-Mart and thought "Wow, cheap racks!" I bought a couple, and next thing I know my pastel Ball is stuck between the tub wall and the rack wall. It was not fun getting him unstuck! These tubs that are big enough for ball pythons have a big gap at the top, unfortunately. I've found that some of the smaller tubs/racks are tighter and would be o.k. for keeping something in it... maybe... I'm talking about the single units. Some of them would work. But, after my experience I just didn't want to risk it again. It is really unfortunate that they do have the gap... Maybe someone should write Sterilite?  :rolf: Anyway, sometimes when something seems too good to be true,  it isn't true.

If you are totally desperate, just buy some Sterilite tubs with lids (41qt size and 28qt size are easy to find at Wal-Mart), and some Flexwatt. You can use the Flexwatt on these tubs even if you don't have a rack set up - It is just annoying having to unstack/stack tubs repeatedly. But it works. You do need a thermostat though. You can buy a cheap thermostat at a pet store (I've used them with success) but most people will recommend buying a higher quality thermostat like Helix, Herpstat, Johnson, Ranco, etc. Like I said - if you are in a jam there are cheaper ways until you can get the good stuff. Loose tubs with tape and a thermostat is much better than aquariums though IMO!

alil craftness makes them work,  its a mate rof if you wanna buy a hseet of  plastic (hard not the flimsy stuff) an cault t into place an go threw all that or not, but the biggest issue i found with them is the gap some of them have in them it looks so tiny but by morning your tearin your house apart lookin for the guy that escaped :S.

A melamine rack can be built very quickly and affordably.  You buy the laminated shelves and they come in widths up to 18 inches at lowes.  A circular saw is best for cutting it, but you can also do it with a reciprocating saw as long as you are patient.  Some Caulk, a drill, and some screws are all thats needed to finish the actual boxing of the rack.  Just make sure you leave about a 1/8" gap between the top of the tub and the roof of the rack level.  Otherwise the tubs slide hard.  Also the basic shelving board does not work with CB-70 and sterilite 35 qt tubs as it isn't wide enough.  You have to find the 24 inch wide stuff to make racks for them.

Last but not least is heating!  I use flexwatt taped to the bottom of the shelf with the aluminum heater duct tape.  It works great and gives the flexwatt protection from the tub sliding across the top of it.  I think we figured for the 35 qt tub rack with 3 tubs and heat it came to about $75.00.  Add T-stat and go!
