« on: March 23, 2009, 01:31:59 PM »
Ok so yesterday we went to get food for my snakey poos.... well while I was at my breeders place I saw a big female girl he had just got. Well as I was looking at her I noticed one eye was like she was blind. So i asked my breeder what happen to her and if she was blind and he was like no he had rescued her and the people who had her didnt help her get the eye caps off yes both eyes are coverd in years and months of shed or eye caps which ever u want to call it. :( man I felt so bad for her. Well he had other people he was dealing with so we waiting on him to get done. I asked to look at her and hold and all that. Bad mistake lol i fell in love with her lol. She is so gentel you would think she would have striked at evey movement and all that nope she just sat there let me pet her head and every where. Well she is 1100 grams so im not sure on her age. My breeder let me take her home with out paying him as i didnt have the money on me. She will be good for my male het pied calm him down for his eager to find a female. She is rooming with him till next weekend we need to buy a heat pad. We will try to work the eye caps off when she goes into shed's and pray she doesnt stay blind I am so MAD how can people do that? If they see something is worng with there eyes how can they just let it go ERRRRRRR but I hope we can help her out some. I will post some pics tonight havent took any yet letting her settle for a bit. She has to be 2 or 3 years old she's at least 4.5 feet.

Get some Visine Tears, we use it to help with stuck sheds, It works really well, and won't hurt their eyes.

Make sure it is all stuck shed.  Corneal edema (spelling) is not unheard of in ball pythons.  I clouds over the eyes and unless you can actually see wrinkles don't try to remove the eye cap due to the clouding as it can lead to blindness.  Only 2 ways of getting rid of Corneal edema, one is an antibiotic cream and it only works if a laceration exists that will allow it to penetrate or a good vet with very steady hands has about a 75% chance of being able to use a needle to get it out.  If he isn't successful with the needle removal method it pretty much results in permanent blindness.

either way, you don't want to just pull them off... keep that humidity up, use the visine on it for awhile and let it soak, if in his next shed there's no missing eye cap from the shed, then it either came off, or it's not a retained eye cap... and would likely be the Corneal Edema as Gloryhound said.

Ok if it is a eye cap its more than one. And if it thats other thing can it be fixed? I will post picks of both eyes and of her later tonight when I have help with taking pics. And we werent just going to pull them off we were going to soak in a warm wash cloth and slowly and gentely rub thats what we do with the female het pied she is a problem shedder or was now shes not.

You put her in with your male??  I don't mean to come off like that, but it might have been good to quarantine her in a seperate tub for a while.  I'd do what has been suggested as far as soaking her first and keeping the humidity up to try to get it to come off it is a stuck eye cap.  Then you may have to take her to the vet's office if it doesn't come off.  Good luck and good job at taking her home ;)

This is what we were told from our specialized reptile vet in Butler, PA (we miss him and are still looking for a good replacement) he also took care of a lot of the animals at the Pittsburgh Zoo.

If it is Corneal Edema it can generally be cured.  Most of the time the Vet will give you an Antibiotic lotion/cream that you will apply to the eye for 2 to 3 weeks.  As long as some kind of abrassion (slight scratch or scuff) exists in the eye the lotion will take care of the bacterial infection.  No Corneal Edema is not contagious.  In some cases where whe cloudiness does not clear up with the lotion and is thick enough to be blinding in and of itself the vet can attempt to use a needle and draw out the cloudy bacteria type substance then go back to the lotion till the needle puncture is healed to avoid having bacteria get back in.  Only problem with using the needle is if the vet goes so much as half a millimeter too deep he can cause permament blindness and it is done while the snake is awake.  That is the reason a vet will generally not go after an eye that is only slightly cloudy that the snake most likely still has some sort of vision through.

With that said, while it is not desireable, a snake can lead a perfectly happy life and be blind in the eyes.  Most snakes use their heat pitts combined with their keep sense of taste (Yes a ball python can actually taste a rat in the air well before actually seeing it, that is why their tongues go crazy sometimes) to see more so than their actual eyes.

I have a good photo of a snake that we got from a big name breeder that came to us with this condition.  (Actually two snakes our of three we got from them through Fed-Ex had the condition.)  I will post it up tonight.  He is actually doing very well now after just using the cream.  His sister has some light cloudiness that we were not able to clear up with the cream, but she is doing OK and is now about 19 to 20 months old.

I'm not going to put the name of the breeder up here in a public forum as I am not into breeder bashing on public forums.  If someone really has to know they can PM me and I will share the info along with the full detailed story.

Here is an example of a nasty case of Corneal Edema.
